Hypothermic 10k Feb 23, 2025

I'm not sure who thought a race a week after Jackpot was a good idea (me, it was me), but there we were on Sunday morning getting ready for one.  Since Eau Claire is all to hell with demolition, this year the Hypothermic route was out from Blue Devil Golf Course in Chapparal, then up the pathways into Fish Creek.  Also, just a 15 min drive from my house.

Upon arrival at the beautiful clubhouse I was immediately impressed with the Log Lady-esque greeting.

We had a look at the route the day before and it was a mix of clear path, packed snow, ice, slush and standing water.  A late winter smorgasbord if you will.  I decided to wear Kahtoola Nanospikes over my Hokas and I can tell you it was a total game changer for winter running.  Running on ice downhill - check!

I haven't enjoyed a race this much in a long time.  It's such a relief to have that happen when you're in a slog of training and long runs.  Kev did really well finishing 2nd overall and I was not last - I’ve taken 2 mins off my km pace since last year.

There were 200 runners in the Half but only 12 in the 10k which made it a bit surreal at the start.

There was a lovely buffet after with hot food, pastries, juice and all the good things.  It was a fantastic day.

Get it Yeti!
