Running Edmonton
In August I'll be running in the Servus Edmonton Marathon weekend for the 5th time. I always look forward to it, it feels like a lovely weekend break but without the usual hours of travel. I'm excited to take on 42.2 again this year, marathon hat trick baby!
Why Edmonton?
I watched a lot of Oilers hockey on VHS tapes in my teenage years as I got into it when they were winning 'all the things'. This might have been the first thing we did back in 2012....
Hi Wayne. Pretty sure he helped me run that 12 min Half PR (with a little help from 87). As you drive in from the south, look out for the giant Stanley Cup on your left.
It's only a 3 hour drive from Calgary and we can stop at Red Deer for Timbits.
Great excuse for a weekend away, we can leave after work on Fri and come back after the race on Sun, no days off required.
I can go to the Olive Garden and not feel guilty.
The marathon course is neat and tidy with 2 out and backs from a central start/finish point. Easy to plan the race by quarters. Very appealing to my sense of order.
I'm a sucker for attention to detail and Edmonton nails the race weekend experience. Well designed shirt, medal (so nice I'm mentioning it again), great expo with varied race merchandise, plenty photo opportunities, brunch after the race (included in entry), and fantastic volunteers throughout.
It actually is 'The Friendly Marathon'.
I get to hang out with fellow ambassadors Laurie, Jamie, Ben, Sean, Megan, and Jen! They are an awesome and inspiring bunch of humans.
This is the 2019 race shirt ^^ There was a vote back in January and this is your winner! I love the clean bold design.
